When a Tattoo Artist's Vision Pushes You Further Than You Expected
Some projects don't come from a client brief. They come from a creative collision — two people with different skills deciding to see what happens when they work together.
In 2023 I had the opportunity to collaborate with AngelsTat2, a Chicago-area tattoo artist whose work stopped me the moment I saw it. His artistry is hyper-detailed, culturally rooted, and deeply personal — the kind of work that doesn't just sit on skin, it tells a story. That energy was exactly the kind I wanted to try to capture on film.
Pushing Outside the Comfort Zone
This project gave me permission to experiment in ways I hadn't before. Rather than my usual documentary-grounded approach, we leaned into something more stylized — bold editing choices, visual rhythm that matched the intensity of Angel's art, and a pace that felt less like a profile and more like an experience.
What that collaboration taught me:
Testing bold techniques you've only thought about forces real creative growth
Collaboration works best when both sides bring their full creativity to the table
Storytelling isn't just about cool visuals — it's about culture, identity, and voice
Sometimes a project plants a seed that shapes everything that comes after
Why This Kind of Film Matters for Artists and Small Businesses
At the time, there wasn't much of this kind of work being done in our area for tattoo artists and independent creatives. Brand films weren't just for corporations — they were for anyone with a craft worth seeing and a story worth telling.
That belief still drives everything we do at MindFlix Films. Whether you're a tattoo artist, a small business owner, or a community figure — if your work has depth, it deserves a film that matches it.
I'll be honest — I didn't end up pursuing this exact stylistic direction long term. But this project became part of the foundation of who I am as a storyteller. It gave me confidence, new tools, and the reminder that growth comes from taking risks even when the path isn't perfectly clear.
Grateful for that opportunity, and even more grateful for where it's led since.
Does your business or creative work have a story worth telling? We'd love to hear about it.
