20th Annual Waukegan Chamber Golf Outing
A couple of years ago, I wrote that every city has a heartbeat and that in Waukegan, the Chamber of Commerce helps keep it strong. This year, the sky decided to test it.
Rain moved across Bonnie Brook Golf Course on the morning of the 20th Annual Waukegan Chamber Golf Outing. Most event shoots dread a forecast like that. By the end of the day, I was glad for it because the rain handed us the story.
The Story Found Us
The carts still rolled out. The sponsors still showed up. Deals still got talked over between holes, just with wetter grips.
And when we put a mic in front of people, something kept happening. Without anyone prompting them, person after person brought up the weather. The Chamber's chairman, board members, and longtime sponsors. Every one of them landed in the same place: rain or not, this is where Waukegan does business. When that many people hand you the same theme on their own, your job as a filmmaker is to get out of the way and let them say it.
Dr. Michael Reed, chairman of the Waukegan Chamber, closed the film the way he closed the day. He thanked the sponsors, board, volunteers, and members who have kept this outing going for twenty years, and invited everyone back for the 21st.
The MindFlix Approach, Year Three
This was our third year filming this outing, and coming back changes the job. Last year was about discovering the why. This year, I already knew it so that the film could move—ninety seconds, music forward, quick cuts, with voices used as punctuation rather than narration. The day's energy carries the film, and the people give it meaning.
That's the quiet advantage of annual coverage. Each year's film builds on the last one, the archive grows, and the organization ends up with something no single video can give you: a record of a community showing up for itself, year after year, whatever the sky decides to do.
Planning Your Organization's Annual Event?
We work with chambers of commerce, business associations, and community organizations across the Chicago area on event films that recruit, inspire, and get better every year we come back. Book a discovery call, and you'll leave with a clear direction and a real number, whether or not we work together.
