Ten years ago, when my wife and I were searching for a home, one of the first things we researched was the school district. Like any parent, we wanted to understand where our kids would learn and grow.

But back then, district websites were mostly text and static photos. There was no way to get a real sense of the personality of a school, the leadership style of its principal, or the culture inside the classrooms.

I remember wishing I could see those things — and today, that wish has become the foundation for a project we’ve now produced four years in a row.

The Project

Each year, we’ve worked with four local elementary and middle schools in CCSD 41 to produce:

• 🎥 Principal Video Profiles
  Personal introductions from each principal, allowing families to hear their voice, see their personality, and understand their leadership style.

• 🏫 School Overview Films
  Videos that highlight each school’s culture, values, and day-to-day energy — capturing what makes each campus unique.

• 📸 Authentic Stock Photography
  Classrooms, activities, and student life are documented for use across websites, newsletters, and district-wide communication.

The goal has been simple: make each school’s digital presence feel more welcoming, more human, and more reflective of the real community inside.

How It’s Being Used

This media is now part of the district’s website redesign, launching soon. Parents will be able to click into each school’s page and immediately:

• Meet the principal.

• Gain insight into the school's culture and energy.

• See real photography of the classrooms, staff, and student experiences.

The photography has also become a trusted resource for the district’s communications team — used in newsletters, presentations, and district-wide messaging. What started as a one-time project has evolved into a comprehensive media library that continues to expand annually.

Behind the Lens

Our focus on this project has always been authenticity.

We spend time inside each school, capturing the genuine energy of students learning, teachers supporting, and principals leading. Each video is more than an introduction — it’s a portrait of the school’s heart and spirit.

Instead of stock footage, parents and families see their actual schools, their actual staff, and their own community in action. That kind of transparency fosters trust, and trust builds connection.

Why This Project Stands Out

For us, this work is deeply personal. What started as a thought I had as a parent 10 years ago has now grown into a project that helps hundreds of families every year feel more confident about their schools.

It also shows a bigger truth: schools, businesses, and organizations all need this kind of storytelling. People want to see who you are. They want to connect with personalities, not just bullet points. And while many organizations hesitate to try, those who do often see stronger, faster relationships with their community.

That’s why we’re proud of our ongoing partnership with Dr. Sandra Keim-Bounds and Lake Villa CCSD 41. It’s proof that when leadership invests in authentic storytelling, the payoff goes far beyond a website update.
